Hollywood keeps remaking the same stories while so many Black, African, and diaspora stories sit on a shelf. I started the SlowBurnLove series because I was tired of seeing Black love told only through struggle. My stories go through things, but they end in a soft landing. This post is about decolonizing the heart. That means letting go of hyper-independence, generational trauma bonds, and respectability politics, and choosing ease, structure, and unapologetic joy instead. Black love does not need endless endurance to be valid. Inside, you will find five ways Black men and five ways Black women can build sanctuary at home, honor our ancestors, and create a legacy that lasts. The soft landing is ours to write.

Eight days. That is how long it took Netflix to renew A Different World for a second season, and I am still smiling about it. The show gives us a version of Black life that is a real and important part of American society, yet so many people never see us this way, including other Black people. It also reminds me why many organizations remain mostly Black. Black organizations create safe spaces in communities that have very few. But safe spaces are not only found on campus colleges. They are built at home too. This week I am asking couples a hard question. Are you holding your partner, or are you just managing them?

Somebody removed my uncle's historical marker. We don't know yet if it was the city or someone who'd rather we forget our history, but the result is the same. A piece of the record is gone. And it's not just happening to my family. Markers honoring Black history are disappearing across the country, Nolan Wells' family is fighting for a truth the official record wouldn't hold, and our own Black institutions keep drifting toward what feels safe instead of what's needed. Even in our love lives, we're watching Black women get cut down for likes. People who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it, and we're watching the repeat in real time.
